Héctor De Jesús-Cortés, Ph.D.

Héctor De Jesús-Cortés, Ph.D., is a neuroscientist, educator, and advocate for innovation whose career bridges scientific excellence with social purpose. Born and raised in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, he has dedicated his life to expanding access to high-quality research opportunities and empowering the next generation of Puerto Rican scientists to lead with curiosity, creativity, and long-term impact.
Dr. De Jesús-Cortés earned his Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras, where his early research on neurodegenerative diseases sparked a lifelong passion for discovery and community engagement. He then completed a Ph.D. in Neuroscience at UT Southwestern Medical Center, publishing numerous peer-reviewed studies that explored cellular protection and the molecular mechanisms of memory. His work exemplified his ability to translate complex science into tangible contributions for human health.
Following his doctoral studies, Dr. De Jesús-Cortés joined the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as a postdoctoral fellow, where he advanced cutting-edge neuroscience research and served in leadership roles that reflected his commitment to mentorship and representation in STEM. As the first Latino President of MIT’s Postdoctoral Association, he championed diversity and collaboration across disciplines, helping to build pathways for underrepresented scholars in science and innovation.
Journey & Impact.
In 2023, Dr. De Jesús-Cortés returned to Puerto Rico as an Assistant Professor of Biology at UPR-Río Piedras. His work now focuses on cultivating local talent, developing hands-on research programs, and fostering a culture of scientific excellence rooted in the island’s unique strengths. His vision is to transform Puerto Rico into a thriving hub for discovery, where talented scientists can build laboratories, lead research, and contribute to global progress, without having to leave home.
As Executive Director of the Trust College of Natural Sciences UPR-RP, Dr. De Jesús-Cortés leads the effort to mobilize resources, forge partnerships, and expand opportunities for faculty, students, and researchers. His goal is to ensure that the Trust becomes a sustainable engine for innovation, one that empowers local talent, attracts international collaboration, and redefines what is possible for science in Puerto Rico.
Dr. De Jesús-Cortés embodies the mission of the Trust: scientific excellence with purpose, leadership with integrity, and an unwavering belief that investing in people is the most powerful way to transform a nation through science.
